Project Runway

So I've started watching Project Runway on DVD. I'm torn between two opinions. The first is that it's awesome! The designers that are competing against each other are really talented, and the challenges are very interesting. The dresses they come up with are stunning! The second is that it totally sucks because about 80% of the show is about showing people crying and freaking out. The actual runway part is about 20 seconds per dress, and so I have to put it on slow motion to be able to see everything.

So see it on DVD. After hearing the challenge, when you see the designers or Heidi Klum, fast forward; and when you see the dresses, slo-mo it.

Proposal

A man asked me to marry him from the window of his car this morning. He looked genuinely crestfallen when I told him I was already married.

Nasty people

As I was riding my bike to rehearsal today, some kid yelled out of a bus, "Hey, that's a ugly ass bike!"and I said "Thank you" for lack of a better response. There was a red light and we both came to a stop. He looked out the window and repeated his observation. I myself observed that he was on an awfully short bus, but I didn't say that to him. Maybe I should have, but I was taught better manners.

Last night our car was broken into. They busted in a small window and broke our CD player (the imbeciles forgot to bring a screwdriver along, so they didn't get to take it), and they made off with our ratchet set. I hope it opens upside down and the ratchets fall out and smash their toes. My coworker Benny said she just leaves her windows open and her doors unlocked. That way they can rifle through her car without breaking anything.

The worst thing about petty criminals is that they simply make you lose faith in the decency of people, you know? It's just so annoying because it's so pointless. So they got a ratchet set. Big fucking deal.

Eating like the devil

The thing about working at a cafe is that unless I am paying close attention, it is impossible to know how many meals I eat in an 8 hour period. On mondays and tuesdays, I eat a small breakfast at 5am before I head in to work. Then I usually have another breakfast around 7. I usually get famished in another two hours, so I usually snoop a bunch of food that the cook is making, and then from there, I'm eating something almost every hour. From beans and rice to carrot soup to beet salad, there is no end of things I like to eat. And then when the shift is over, I think to myself: I haven't had lunch yet! So I have a piece of vegan pizza and then sometimes even dessert. Today was particularly bad-- on top of all the good-for-you food, I had fingerfuls of cookie dough, pound cake batter, an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, and a caramel latte. And I'm already hungry again! My stomach is like a yawning abyss. Like that woman from that Murakami novel who had some kind of gastric problem and could eat like a mofo.

Wind

I biked to my massage appointment today and back, and the wind was just evil. Little seeds and dust kept flying into my eyes and nose, and sometimes the gusts would almost completely stop my bike. I shook my fist at the cruel wind in vain.

But it was sunny and warm, and that's all that matters sometimes.

Misc...

I am newly awestruck by DINOSAURS!! I saw real (REAL!) dinosaur skeletons at the science museum in St. Paul when Dave, Jonner, and I went to see the Body Worlds exhibit. I've seen Body Worlds before in Chicago, so my awe and admiration went mostly to an almost whole, skeleton of a triceratops, that's REAL. I can't even believe it. That wing thingy in the back of their head is bone, and it's REAL. The three horns, yeah, they're sharp and pointy, and REAL. And dinosaurs were gigantic! I can't believe how big they were. It would have been awesome to see them when they were alive. Wow.

I got rained on while planting ajuga this afternoon.

My kitties knocked over a plant while I was outside and I sprayed them vigorously and methodically in the face.

My show has opened, and now I have time to paint again.

Jonner and I are watching Seven Samurai, and we've managed to spread that movie out over a span of three separate viewings (we started it at least a week ago)-- SO FAR. We're still not done. Sheesh. I hope we can finish it tonight. This time I'll leave the whisky alone. (Thanks Dave! I owe you some whisky)

I love you too Josh. But I'll kill you if you call me Joannua. Just kidding. You can call me whatever you want.

The new mellow me

Jason, honey, if you like the nasty me, I can let the vitriol flow. Anything for you.

Actually, I'm a little embarrassed. In an attempt to be funny, my comments (that I have been spreading liberally around cyberspace) lately have been a little, well, nasty sounding. I am a very nice person offline, and I love you. I love all of you, and if you visit me, I'll make you cake and coffee. *kiss kiss*

There's not a whole lot going on here.

I guess one thing I've been doing lately is try to figure out how to use hair spray. I have straight, limp hair, and in an effort to give it some body, I bought a bottle of cheap hair spray. I spray it while my hair is still damp and with my head down. Then I blow dry it. But it's still not quite right. I never used it in the 80's (I know, amazing how I bypassed that), I had long hair and no bangs through high school, and now I feel like I'm too old to learn how to use it.

Another burn

So I have a few little scars from working at the bakery, and I've got one more. Unfortunately, it's never going to be very impressive. I burned my elbow on the oven door. I'm jealous of my coworker Margot who got an inch long slash of a burn on her arm and it's turned all brown.

Art

I revisited Luke Chueh's artwork the other day, and marveled again at how he manages to tell a complete and exceedingly sad story with each of his simple little paintings. This one is my favorite. Not so macabre as some of the others, but strange and dark nonetheless.

Pure delicious fat

I made a chocolate bread pudding today that replaced 3 loaves of french bread with 12 croissants. Holy moly! It's so good. A mixture including 9 eggs, 6 cups of cream, and 12 croissants simply can't be good for you. But the buttery creamy goodness is absolutely irresisitible.

Belated

Oy! I missed my kitties' birthday yesterday. They are both one year old now. I wonder what I should do for them. I should throw a party, that's what.

Hot people

I'm on a roll. Another great thing about spring is that everyone looks gorgeous! Everybody I see lately is beautiful. The women that have been coming into the cafe are all cute and smell good and the guys are adorable and sexy. I was driving the other day and saw two shirtless guys working on a roof. I had a serious case of rubber neck.

So I guess the mandate for the day is: Drive slow homie, cuz you might see some hot people. Or something.

love love love

Spring is awesome. The birds are laying eggs, my dog is fake-humping my cat, the weeds are loving every inch of my yard (I'm telling ya! I've been pulling them out, and they're bound and determined to stay where they are), my lilacs are putting out the most alluring scents, and of course, me and jonner are loving each other too, in a married sort of way. Yeah!

Here's a picture of my kitties loving each other.

Sunshine

Well that last post wouldn't post until today. I was having computer problems. Anyway, yesterday and today are like night and day. Yesterday I was so groggy and crabby all day long, and today I'm quite happy and perky. Yeah! It probably has something to do with the SUN.

Well I got work to do!

May Day

Happy May Day everyone. Despite my hearty support for immigrants and immigration reform (the good kind), I am just too tired to get my ass out there to protest. I don't even know where they're happening around here. But all this does make me wonder when I'm going to get to the final stage of my own immigration process. My legal status in the US is the result of a long process that started almost 27 years ago when my family first moved over here. Maybe within the year I'll get to take this oath they keep talking about. And then I'll finally get to vote! Although I wish I could have voted last time when the choice was pretty damn clear.

Onto better and more trivial matters-- I made a carrot cake today. I'm looking forward to eating it this afternoon after a nice hot shower. I'm going to trim my nails and sit down to watch a movie with my kittites, a bottle of water, a multivitamin, and carrot cake.
