More nursing, some cormorants

Nursing Ruby is becoming more interesting every day. One time she commented, "milk dancing" as she pushed my shirt up and down. The other day, we were watching a youtube video of Obama speaking, as she nursed, and she stopped to say, "Obama nursing" over and over again. Occasionally, even days afterwards, she remembers it and stops what she's doing to say "Obama nursing" with an almost nostalgic look on her face.

Speaking of Obama, she seems to like watching him. She can't get enough. I went to his website, and there's a short video of him introducing the site, and whenever it's over she chants, "more Obama, more Obama".

On a different note, the highlight of my day today was watching cormorants in Powderhorn Lake. We had a new pair of binoculars with us, and watched the amazing swimming birds for a half hour. They were so cool! I still don't know exactly what kind they were-- they were black with bright yellow chins and lower beaks. It was such a treat to see them swimming and catching fish. At one point one of them dove under water and nipped at a Canadian goose. Kind of mean, I think.

Lopsided

So Ruby has taken to talking to me with her mouth full of boob. It's irritating sometimes, but always amusing. Usually I can't understand her, because her mouth is full of boob, but the other day, she said quite clearly, "big one". And then she looked at the other boob and said "other one", and then back at the original and said, "big one". I guess one of them's big.

(On a side note, I never ever would have imagined this scenario as part of breastfeeding when I first started. I thought I'd be done after a year, but I'm finding that being a mom is all about eating your words. I always thought it'd be creepy to breastfeed after the child could ask for it, but you know what? It's not, and it's actually really sweet. Who would have known.)

Pain Relief

This morning, Ruby told Jonathon "teeth hurt!" and proceeded to mash her face and head together in a display of pain. Jonathon decided to give her some ibuprofen, and after several minutes, she announced, "Happy now".

Night time musings

Ruby repeats things as she falls asleep these days. She usually fixates on something from the day, and it's always very amusing to hear what she decides to dwell on as she drifts off.

"beagle teeth, beagle teeth, beagle teeth"
"ruby ears, mama ears, abba ears, gampa ears, etc."

And last night,

"shaushage, shaushage, shaushage,..." asleep. Meaty dreams, little girl.

Please Help

One of Ruby's favorite phrases these days is "peese hep". Unfortunately, it's usually for enlisting help for doing something like climbing onto the table or obtaining pens or knives. The other day, she said "pees hep, pees hep, toes hurt!" Which was about the most useful thing she's said so far.

She loves to repeat unlikely phrases like "clay butt" or "eric coming" or "abba(dad) tooted" or "boogie night". Usually it's repeating the end of something we just said. Jonathon just said, "be careful, you'll get yourself wet". And Ruby's saying "self wet, self wet". Earlier, she heard a lady saying loudly to a dog, "you're such a loverboy!", and she was mumbling "loverboy, loverboy".

OK now she's demanding "more kitty" meaning she wants to see more youtube videos of cats.
